LUSAS Introductory Course

An introduction to the basics of Finite Element Analysis in LUSAS.
  • Level: Beginner
  • Video duration:  7.5 hours
  • Expected learning time:  16 hours
  • Instructor: Andy Taylor
  • Cost: £250 + VAT

Who is it for?

  • New or existing users

This course is for engineers with little or no prior knowledge of LUSAS, or for those wanting to refresh their knowledge of carrying out linear static analysis for structural and bridge applications.
  • In summary

The course covers getting started with LUSAS and proceeds to cover in detail:
    • Modelling and analysis options available for creating beam models
    • Loading types within LUSAS
    • Shell and plate modelling, and composite beam-slab construction
    • Mesh refinement, Vehicle loading optimisation, and Design calculation functionality

What will I learn about?

The course consists of online video sessions followed by the user carrying out worked examples on their own computer.

Quizzes are used to check the trainee's learning and a CPD certificate stating the number hours of study is available on successful completion of all quizzes.

Obtain answers and practical engineering guidance as shown right:

Modelling methodologies

Why has a certain modelling approach been adopted? What assumptions and limitations are there?

Feature geometry

Why features are defined in a certain way.

Meshing

What elements are used and why? Limitations, alternatives, connectivity issues, orientations, end releases.

Section properties and materials

How they have been calculated and why. Use of eccentricities. Pre-defined and user-defined materials

Supports and loading

Fixed and spring supports. Gravity, concentrated,  distributed, patch and vehicle loading.

Checking and results

Steps to take, loadcase, reactions, deformed shape, magnitude of deformations, warnings, mesh refinement.

Accessing LUSAS

Please note that the latest release version of LUSAS will be used for the training course. Individuals who wish to attend the training who do not have access to the required version of the software may request a temporary training licence from LUSAS to allow the running of the software on their personal computers.
